PIB membranes are made of polyisobutylene, a synthetic rubber that is unique in its gas tightness. This material is known as the only rubber that can retain air for a long period of time. Polyisobutylene is a vinyl polymer similar in structure to polyethylene and polypropylene, except that every second carbon atom has two methyl groups. It was first synthesized in the early 1940s.
